Learn It. Grow It. Own It.

Friday is here again

Before You Call This Week a Wash, Look Again

Friday has a funny way of turning us into accountants.

We tally what we finished, subtract what we didn’t, and decide whether the week was a success.

Unfortunately, we often leave half the receipts out.

The conversation that helped someone? Apparently, that doesn’t count.

The question we finally had the courage to ask? No box to tick.

The mistake we caught before it became someone else’s headache? Barely a mention.

But those three things still sitting on the to-do list? Oh, they get a full committee hearing.

Before you judge your week by what remains unfinished, look at what is different because you lived it.

Perhaps you understand something today that confused you on Monday. Perhaps you taught someone a skill and discovered a gap in your own understanding. Perhaps you paused before replying to an email that deserved a response written with oven mitts on.

That last one may have saved your Friday.

Growth rarely arrives with a marching band. Sometimes it arrives as a better question, a calmer response, or the quiet realization that you no longer need help with something that once felt impossible.

And because those changes are small, we can walk straight past them.

Your To-Do List Has a Poor Memory

A to-do list is useful. I have several. Some may now qualify as historical documents.

But it records tasks far better than it records development.

“Finish presentation” is easy to write down.

“Realize the example isn’t clear, rethink it, and find a better way to explain it” takes longer. Yet that work may be exactly what makes the presentation worth hearing.

The same applies to learning. You might finish a course and feel pleased with yourself. Fair enough. But the interesting part comes afterward.

Did you try something?

Did you explain it to someone else?

Did you notice a problem you would previously have missed?

That is where learning starts earning its keep.

Give Yourself a Fair Review

Before you close the laptop this Friday, take a few minutes to answer three questions:

  • What do I understand better than I did on Monday?

  • What did I do that helped someone
