When Professional Development just means a day out of the office

Stop Collecting Training. Start Using It.
I have a confession.
I love learning.
Give me a new idea, an interesting webinar, a book that makes me scribble furiously in the margins, or a speaker who makes me think, “Well, THAT just changed the way I look at things,” and I am a very happy woman.
But there is a problem in the professional world.
We have become very good at collecting training.
We attend the webinar.
We download the handout.
We earn the CPE.
We save the workbook somewhere on our computer in a folder optimistically called Professional Development.
And then?
Life happens.
The emails start arriving. Someone needs a report. A meeting runs long. A deadline moves forward. Something catches fire metaphorically, occasionally literally, and that brilliant idea we learned Tuesday afternoon quietly disappears beneath Wednesday morning.
Which raises an uncomfortable question:
Did we actually learn anything?
Attendance Is Not Learning
There is an enormous difference between being exposed to information and being able to use it.
You can sit through two hours of training on fraud and still miss the red flag sitting directly in front of you.
You can memorize the formula for earned value management and still have no idea what to ask when a project is sliding off the rails.
You can attend an AI course, learn seventeen exciting new terms, and walk away wondering what on earth you're supposed to do with any of them Monday morning.
Information alone isn't transformation.
And that distinction sits at the heart of what we're building at LG3.
Learn It.
First, we absolutely need knowledge.
But knowledge needs context.
Don't just tell me what something is. Tell me why I should care.
Show me where it appears in the real world.
Give me an example.
Let me poke at it.
Let me ask the slightly uncomfortable question.
And, occasionally, let me get it wrong.
Because getting something wrong in a classroom is considerably cheaper than getting it wrong on a $200 million project.
That's learning.
Grow With It.
This is the part professional education too often forgets.
Learning should change something.
Maybe it changes the questions you ask.
Maybe you recognize a risk sooner.
Maybe you approach a difficult conversation differently.
Maybe you finally challenge the phrase:
"That's the way we've always done it."
Or perhaps you simply gain enough confidence to raise your hand and say:
"Can someone explain why we're doing this?"
Growth doesn't always arrive carrying fireworks and a marching band.
Sometimes it is one better question.
One different decision.
One moment when you notice something you wouldn't have noticed before.
That's growth.
Own It.
And then comes my favorite part.
Take what you've learned and make it yours.
Don't repeat my words.
Use your own.
Don't blindly copy somebody else's checklist.
Understand what the checklist is trying to accomplish and adapt it to your organization.
Don't become dependent upon the instructor.
Become better because you met the instructor.
That is the goal.
At LG3, I don't want people walking away saying:
"Denise certainly knows a lot about construction auditing."
Although, admittedly, I won't object.
I want them walking away thinking:
"I know what I'm going to do differently tomorrow."
That is a very different measure of success.
Your Challenge for Today
Think about the last course, webinar, conference session, podcast, or book that taught you something useful.
Now ask yourself one question:
What did I actually do with it?
If the answer is nothing yet, don't feel guilty.
Go find one thing.
One idea.
One technique.
One question.
One tiny change.
And use it.
Because professional development shouldn't be something we collect.
It should be something that changes how we work, how we think, and eventually, how we lead.
That's why at LG3, our philosophy isn't complicated:
Learn It. Grow With It. Own It.
Now go own something.
Preferably before somebody schedules another webinar.
