It's time to change

Stop Waiting Until You’re Ready
I have some potentially disappointing news.
You may never be ready.
Ready to lead the meeting.
Ready to apply for the promotion.
Ready to give the presentation.
Ready to write the book.
Ready to start the business.
Ready to try AI.
Ready to tackle the enormous project that has been sitting on your desk glaring at you for three weeks.
Ready to do that thing you've been telling yourself you'll do “when I'm ready.”
There is an excellent chance that magical moment isn't coming.
I know. Rude.
I’ll Do It When...
We professionals are exceptionally talented at creating respectable reasons to wait.
I need a little more experience.
I should take another course first.
I need to research it more.
Let's wait until after quarter-end.
Things are crazy right now.
I'll start when I have more time.
And my personal favorite:
“I just want to make sure it's perfect.”
Ah, perfection.
The beautifully dressed cousin of procrastination.
Perfection sounds responsible. Professional, even.
But sometimes “I want it to be perfect” really means:
“I'm scared to put it out there.”
That is an entirely different problem.
Ready Usually Arrives After You Start
Think about the things you now do confidently.
Were you completely ready the first time you did them?
Probably not.
Your first presentation?
Your first audit?
Your first project?
Your first time managing people?
Your first difficult conversation with an executive?
At some point, somebody handed you responsibility and you thought:
Well...this should be interesting.
And then you figured it out.
You prepared.
You asked questions.
You made mistakes.
You adjusted.
You learned.
And eventually the thing that once terrified you became something you could do without your heart attempting to escape through your rib cage.
That's the secret nobody puts on the certificate.
Confidence often comes after action, not before it.
There Is a Difference Between Unprepared and Not Ready
Now, before anyone runs into a board meeting armed with three Post-it notes and enthusiasm and blames me, let me clarify something.
I'm not suggesting we stop preparing.
Preparation matters.
Training matters.
Research matters.
Planning absolutely matters.
There is a difference between being unprepared and feeling not quite ready.
Being unprepared means you haven't done the work.
Feeling not ready often means you've done the work, but you're waiting for the fear to disappear.
It might not.
Sometimes you simply have to take the fear along for the ride.
Give it a seat in the back.
Preferably not one with access to the radio.
The 80% Question
Here's a question I've learned to ask myself:
Am I genuinely not prepared, or am I simply uncomfortable?
That's a powerful distinction.
If you're not prepared, prepare.
If you need knowledge, learn.
If you need help, ask.
If there is a genuine risk you haven't considered, stop and consider it.
But if you've done the work and the only thing standing between you and the next step is that little voice whispering...
Maybe just wait a bit longer...
You might already be ready enough.
Sometimes 80% ready and moving will take you much further than 100% ready and standing perfectly still.
I’m Taking My Own Advice
This one feels particularly relevant to me right now.
On September 9, LG3 officially launches.
Could I keep tweaking things?
Absolutely.
Could I find another page to improve, another idea to add, another sentence to rewrite?
Please.
I'm a writer.
I could edit a comma until Christmas.
But eventually you have to stop preparing something for the world and actually put it into the world.
LG3 won't launch because every single thing is perfect.
It will launch because it's ready to begin.
And there is a difference.
We'll learn. We'll learn together. Welcome to the team.
We'll listen.
We'll change things. We will transform.
We'll add things.
We'll probably discover a few things that make me say, “Well, THAT wasn't supposed to happen.”
And we'll grow.
Sound familiar?
Learn it. Grow it. Own it.
LG3 isn't just asking you to embrace that philosophy.
Apparently, we're going to have to live it too.
Your Turn
So think about something you've been putting off.
Not because you don't want it.
But because you keep telling yourself you're not quite ready.
Ask yourself:
What exactly am I waiting for?
If there is something you genuinely need, go get it.
Learn it.
Ask for help.
Prepare.
But if you're waiting for some glorious morning when you wake up completely confident, entirely fearless and absolutely certain of the outcome...
You may want to make coffee.
It's going to be a long wait.
Sometimes you don't need to feel ready.
Sometimes you just need to begin.
And Thursday seems like a perfectly good day to start.
