Back to School? Back to Learning: Why Your Professional Education Shouldn’t Take the Summer Off

The lunchboxes are packed. The uniforms are (hopefully) clean. The school run is back. And after weeks of hearing “I’m bored!” from the back seat, the kids are finally heading back to school.

Which got us thinking…

Now that the kids are back to learning, shouldn’t you be, too?

September has always felt like a fresh start. New teachers. New classes. New notebooks. New goals. And while we may have traded our school uniforms for business attire a long time ago, there is absolutely no reason we should stop learning.

In fact, for professionals working in auditing, risk, fraud, compliance, governance and internal controls, continuous learning isn't a nice-to-have. It’s part of staying good at what we do.

The world didn’t take the summer off

While many of us were thinking about holidays, barbecues and whether the British weather would finally give us a decent weekend, the business world kept moving.

Risks changed.

Technology evolved.

Fraudsters came up with new ideas.

Regulations shifted.

AI continued to change the way organizations operate.

Third-party relationships became more complex.

And the expectations placed on auditors, risk professionals and governance teams continued to grow.

The question isn't whether things changed while you were away.

The question is: are you up to date with what changed?

Learning isn't just about collecting CPE

Let's be honest. Sometimes professional education gets treated as a box-ticking exercise.

“I need my hours.”

“I need to get my credits.”

“I'll find something interesting eventually.”

And suddenly, December arrives and you're scrambling to complete the last few hours of education before the deadline.

But what if we looked at professional learning differently?

What if those hours weren't simply something you had to complete—but something that could actually make you better at your job?

That's the difference between earning education and using education.

The best learning should make you stop and think:

“Wait… we don't do it that way.”

“I need to ask my client about that.”

“That's a risk we haven't considered.”

“I wonder what would happen if we tested that control?”

“We need to have that conversation with management.”

That's when education becomes valuable.

Your professional world doesn't stand still

One of the biggest challenges facing today's professionals is that yesterday's knowledge doesn't necessarily solve tomorrow's problems.

Consider fraud.

The techniques used by fraudsters continue to evolve. Technology creates new opportunities for deception, manipulation and collusion. Organizations are increasingly dependent on third parties and fourth parties. Remote and hybrid working environments have changed the way controls operate. Artificial intelligence is creating opportunities—and risks—that many organizations are still figuring out.

And then there is the human element.

Culture.

Leadership.

Judgment.

Ethics.

Governance.

All of these things influence whether an organization identifies risk early—or discovers it after the damage has been done.

You can't effectively manage today's risks using only yesterday's knowledge.

September is your professional “new year”

There's something about September that makes us want to reset.

Maybe it's because we've spent the summer operating on a slightly different schedule. Maybe it's because the return to school reminds us that learning is a normal—and necessary—part of life.

Whatever the reason, September is a perfect time to ask yourself three questions:

What do I need to learn?

What have I been putting off learning?

What could I learn that would make me better at what I do?

Don't just think about the courses you are required to take.

Think bigger.

What subject keeps appearing in your audit findings?

What risk keeps coming up in conversations with management?

What area of your organization makes you think, “I'm not entirely comfortable with this”?

What technology are you not quite sure how to evaluate?

What emerging risk have you heard about but haven't really explored?

Start there.

And yes… you can still get excited about learning

Learning doesn't have to mean sitting through hours of slides while desperately trying to keep your eyes open.

It can be challenging.

It can be practical.

It can be provocative.

It can make you question the way you've always done things.

And it can even be fun.

It's the person who never stops learning.
