Is your project really green?

Your Project Reports Are Green. Is Your Project Under Control?

The dashboard is green. The meeting is cheerful. Everyone agrees the project is progressing nicely.

Then someone mentions an unpaid invoice, a delayed delivery, and a change order that “hasn’t quite made it into the numbers yet.”

Suddenly, green looks less reassuring.

A project report can be accurate within its own boundaries and still leave you with an incomplete picture. Spending to date may look comfortable while commitments are piling up. A completion date may remain unchanged even though the work needed to meet it is slipping.

Before accepting that comforting glow, ask five questions:

  1. What does green actually mean? Is status measured against agreed thresholds, or someone’s optimism?

  2. Does the forecast include the full expected cost? Ask about commitments, pending changes, and known exposures.

  3. What supports the reported progress? Look for completed work and accepted deliverables.

  4. Who owns the difficult decisions? An unresolved issue needs a person and a deadline.

  5. What has changed since approval? Consider scope, assumptions, benefits, and delivery dates.

Vague answers deserve attention. They do not automatically mean the project is failing, but they may justify an independent look.

A project audit can examine whether decisions, spending, reporting, and controls support successful delivery. Done early enough, it can give management time to act while choices are still available.

Try this today: Take one green item from your latest project report. Ask what evidence supports it and what would cause its status to change.
